Privacy at Shelltime: What We Collect and Why

At Shelltime, we take your privacy seriously. This page explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and what we do (and don’t do) with it. Let’s break it down:

What Data Do We Collect?

When you use Shelltime to track your shell history, we collect the following information:

Command Tracking Data

This helps us track your shell commands:

  • SessionID: A unique identifier for your shell session (not tied to your identity).
  • Command: The actual shell command executed.
  • StartTime / EndTime: When the command started and finished.
  • StartTimeNano / EndTimeNano: Precise timestamps for better analysis.
  • Result: The exit code of the command.

Metadata

This provides context about the environment:

  • Hostname: The name of your machine.
  • Username: Your local machine username (not linked to any online accounts).
  • OS & OS Version: Information about your operating system.
  • Shell: Which shell (e.g., Zsh or Fish) you are using.
  • CLI Version: The version of the Shelltime CLI you’re running.

Why Do We Collect This Data?

We collect this data to:

  • Analyze Trends: Understand common usage patterns to improve the tools you rely on.
  • Enhance Features: Provide insights or recommendations based on your shell usage.
  • Debug Issues: Identify and fix bugs in the Shelltime CLI effectively.

Important: None of the collected data is used to track or identify you personally.

What We Don’t Do

We’re developers too, so we get it — privacy matters. Here’s what we don’t do:

  • No Selling Data: Your data stays with us. We will never sell or share your data with third parties.
  • No Single-User Tracking: We only analyze data in aggregate to improve Shelltime for everyone. We’re not here to spy on individual activities.

Transparency and Control

  • Clear Intentions: Everything we collect is listed here, plain and simple.
  • Your Data, Your Choice: Want to stop using Shelltime? You can delete your data anytime.

We’re committed to creating a tool that respects your privacy and helps you get the most out of your shell history. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Happy shelling,
